Take a look back over your last five years of doing business. What does it look like?
As messy as a child finger painting? A jumble of half baked ideas?
Or can you see yourself working on through gritted teeth, day after day just to pay the bills? Did you spend much of your time zigzagging from one grand idea to the next ‘cannot fail’ possibility?
If so, you’ve paid a hidden price for a lack of clarity.
The hidden cost
More than disappointment, or misplaced effort, or time you can never recover, a lack of clarity is not being now where you could have been, if you’d been driving all along toward a clearly defined and burning intention.
That’s not to deny that the learnIngs from undirected experience are manifold. It’s true you can draw new knowledge and understanding, and greater insight and skills from every abandoned idea, change in direction or period of sustained endurance.
But how much better would it be if you gained them while applying time and effort coherently to a clear and immutable intention that defined exactly where you wanted to go.
You can only achieve that through clarity.
Where do you want to be?
So, can you articulate with complete clarity where you want to be by when?
‘I want to make bucket loads of money’ won’t cut it. I want to make xx million by 2020 is a start but a tad self orientated and lacking in purpose.
Fuelling the work of intention
To get real clarity around an intention, you need first to have defined your purpose, the why of what you want to do. The ‘I believe’ statement that comes from your heart. Then you’ll have the fuel to achieve the intention.
For example: ‘By 2020, I will run a best practice company that turns over xx million. We will directly change the way in which people do xxx, resulting in better xxxx for xxxx number of people. Because I believe ….
If such a statement makes your heart race, your head zing with directed and purposeful ideas, and you cannot wait each day to get more stuff done toward it, then you have clarity of intention.
Clarity of intention fans desire because it informs exactly why you do what you do for whom.
Now every thought and action will build toward it from product development to hiring teams. From getting it right online to positioning, content generation and digital networking.
Realising a fuller potential
Even if you have an idea that fails, or you go down a wrong path and need to change direction, that will not be because of a lack of clarity or alter the intention. It will just make you more resolved to move toward it. That’s a grand place to be.
Entrepreneurs are complex creatures. Flawed and magnificent. With potential way beyond anything most of us will ever realise in a lifetime. With clarity, we have the capacity to realise so much more of that potential than without.
